Book Study: A Guide to the Reading Workshop

Overview

Participants will be diving into the reading workshop model through a study of A Guide to the Reading Workshop book. Whether you are or are not a teacher or school using the Units of Study for Teaching Reading, this book study explores the instructional method of the reading workshop. Participants will independently read the book and post online. Instructional methods will include discussion posts, reading, reflection, and feedback.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Understand the principles of the reading workshop.
  • Understand reading development across grade levels.
  • Understand the logistical structure of the reading workshop.
  • Understand the architecture and principles that inform minilessons. 
  • Learn ways to use assessments to support responsive teaching.
  • Learn ways to support all learners.

  • A Guide to the Reading Workshop: Intermediate Grades by Lucy Calkins ISBN 978-0-325-09210-2 
  • A Guide to the Reading Workshop: Secondary Grades by Lucy Calkins and Mary Ehrenworth ISBN 978-0-325-09725-1

Graduate-Level Continuing Education: 

One continuing education credit is available through MidAmerica Nazarene University at an additional cost of $90 per credit hour.
