Book Study: A Guide to the Writing Workshop

Format: Online Book Study - Asynchronous On-Demand

Overview

Participants will be diving into the writing workshop model through a study of the book A Guide to the Writing Workshop by Lucy Calkins.  Whether you are or are not a teacher or school using the Units of Study for Teaching Writing, this book study explores the instructional method of the writing workshop. Participants will independently read the book and post online. Instructional methods will include discussion posts, reading, reflection, and feedback.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Understand the principles of the writing workshop.
  • Understand the necessities of writing instruction
  • Understand the logistical structure of the writing workshop.
  • Understand the architecture and principles that inform minilessons.
  • Learn ways to create positive classroom management in a writing workshop.  
  • Learn ways to use assessments to support responsive teaching.
  • Learn ways to support all learners.

  • A Guide to the Writing Workshop: Intermediate Grades by Lucy Calkins ISBN 978-0-325-09207-2 
  • A Guide to the Writing Workshop: Middle School by Lucy Calkins ISBN 978-0-325-09208-7

Graduate Level Continuing Education: 

One continuing education credit is available through MidAmerica Nazarene University at an additional cost of $90 per credit hour.
