Overview: 

The current emphasis on the body of research known as the "Science of Reading" has renewed the reading wars and raised challenging questions for balanced literacy teachers about the best way to teach reading. We will use this book as a  concise and practical guide to understanding how to integrate effective reading strategies from each perspective. Each chapter focuses on a key shift that will help us understand common misconceptions and adjust our thinking around some common instructional practices that teachers have been using for decades.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how comprehension works.
  • Understand the importance of phonemic awareness. 
  • Explore various ways to teach phonics. 
  • Examine high-frequency word instruction. 
  • Discover different ways to use MSV. 
  • Explore texts for beginning readers.
